1990 D RD - Post-Strike Plier Dmg [U]
UPDATE: After some back and forth on the coincommunity.com forums and closer investigation of the edge showed a slight bulge, I'm 99.9% convinced this was post-strike damage using some sort of plier device.
The idented areas are on this nearly line up back to front, but do not exactly. The cut looks similar to what I've seen on struck-through rim-burrs, but I never seen one that occured on both sides like this. Here are what I see as options:
1. Defective Blank - the blank had a wedge of metal missing from it for some reason and the metal flow during the strike was not able to fully close it and fill it in.
2. Some type of strike-through, though I'm not sure what would cause a slightly mis-aligned similar gouge on both sides of the coins.
3. Post-strike damage. I'm least confident in this because the features of the gouge indicate this defect occur pre-strike or during the strike instead of after.
